Daniel R.GOMEZ of Longmont died Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, at Longmont United Hospital. He was 59.

Dan was born Nov. 27, 1946, in Longmont to Joe Gomez and Rose Cardenas Gomez. He was proud to have been a fourth-generation Coloradan.

Dan grew up in Longmont, graduating from Longmont High School in 1964.

On Feb. 10, 1966, he married Grace Gutierrez in Colorado Springs. One month later, he entered and served with the U.S. Marines in Vietnam. He received a number of medals, including a Purple Heart. His injuries took a number of months to heal, with much of the time spent at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver.

Following his service to his country, Dan attended and graduated summa cum laude from National Business College.

For the past 37 years, Mr. Gomez had worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce in Boulder, where he was the chief of the contracting branch of the Mountain Region Acquisition Division.

Mr. Gomez had been an active member of New Creation Church for many years. He served as a deacon, was superintendent of the Sunday school program and ran the bus ministry for a number of years. He was also a member of IMAGE, a Hispanic Businessman’s Association.

Dan was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He appreciated classic muscle cars and enjoyed the ColoRODans car shows. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and watch football games and boxing matches with family.

Surviving are his wife of Longmont; his parents of Longmont; a son, Daniel Gomez Jr. and his wife Megan of Longmont; a daughter, Christina “Tina” Nelson and her husband Jarrod of Thornton; a brother, Joe Gomez Jr. and his wife Kim of Aiea, Hawaii; three grandchildren, Spencer and Olivia Gomez and Ciarra Nelson; and his cousins, the Munoz family.

A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 6, at Howe Mortuary.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at New Creation Ministries, with the Rev. Mario Latini officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. American Legion Post No. 32 of Longmont will provide military honors.
