SPENGLER, Dow L.

Oct. 3, 1933 — June 29, 2004

Dow L. Spengler of rural Winfield, Kan., died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at his home. He was 70.

He was born Oct. 3, 1933, in Winfield to Lyman M. and Ethel B. (Clavin) Spengler

Mr. Spengler attended Maple Grove Elementary School and later graduated from Winfield High School in 1951. He worked with his family on the farm.

He married Patricia A. Crandle on May 26, 1956, in Winfield. The couple made their home east of Winfield and Mr. Spengler was employed at Smith and Moon, General Electric and Gordon-Piatt. In 1969 the couple moved to Tonkawa, Okla., for a short time and he taught a Manpower program at the college. They moved to Thornton in 1970 and later Dacono. He was employed as a welder and pipe fitter for Rocky Flats. During that time he also taught welding at Longmont High School.

In 1979 the couple moved back to Winfield and he began working at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita as a tool welder. He retired in 1996 following 16 years of service.

Mr. Spengler was a member of the National Rifle Association and loved to hunt and fish. He also enjoyed raising goats and working crossword puzzles. He was an avid Denver Broncos fan.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia of Winfield; two sons, Wesley Spengler and wife Sherri of Longmont and Rick Spengler and wife Tammy of Mulvane, Kan., three daughters, Jullie Loper and her husband Brian of Longmont, Dawn of Winfield and Melissa Spengler of Concordia, Kan.; a brother, Milton Spengler of Winfield, Kan.; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 3, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at New Salem Cemetery, northeast of Winfield. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m., Friday, July 2. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. that day.

A memorial fund has been established in Mr. Spengler’s name for Alzheimer’s Disease Research. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home.
