The funeral Mass for Hortense A. Backes, 100, a resident of the Kahl Home for the Aged in Davenport, was celebrated Friday, April 17, 2009, at 11:15 a.m. in the Kahl Home Chapel. Hortense passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at the Kahl Home. Burial will be in the family plot at Carolina Memorial Gardens in North Charleston, South Carolina. Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with local arrangements.

Hortense Anna Backes was born July 20, 1908, in Athens, Wisconsin, a daughter of John Baptist and Anna (Vrankes) Backes. She grew up on the family farm in Athens until moving to Charleston, South Carolina, where she worked in purchasing and accounting for the U.S. Navy, from which she retired in 1969 after 28 years of service. She then taught in a Catholic elementary school prior to her move in 1976 to Longmont, Colorado. She lived her Christian faith as a caregiver to others, as a longtime member of the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Longmont and the Kahl Home Chapel in Davenport.

Survivors include her brother, Carl Backes Sr. and his wife Jacqueline of Star Valley, AZ; her nephews, Carl Backes Jr. and his wife Connie of Loveland, CO, and John Backes and his wife Patricia of Seattle, WA; her niece, Mary Backes and her husband Frank Kurtyka of Fort Collins, CO; seven great-nieces and great-nephews; and three great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
